MDI Case Study

CUSTOMER:
3M, Bristol, PA

REQUIREMENTS:
A safety risk to operating personnel needed to be eliminated during the manufacturing of wide adhesive tapes. When process instrumentation indicated that an unacceptable section was being produced in the parent roll, a reject ticket had to be manually placed on the moving web. This activity was inherently risky. A device was needed to separate the operator's hands from the moving web

MDI SOLUTION APPROACH:

A multi-phased approach was applied to develop a high quality solution.

Information was gathered and analyzed pertaining to all the needs, wants, and constraints.

The greatest design challenge was to "stick" half of the reject ticket to the edge of the web while it was moving at 500 yards per minute.

A design concept was devised for the "mechanical hand" portion of the device.

A proof of principle test model was designed, built, and installed on the process line.

After successful test results, a production worthy design was completed.

The complete system including access-limiting guarding was constructed and installed on the line.

RESULTS:

The new device proved to be functional, easy to use, and rugged enough to hold up in its environment.

Operating personnel are now physically protected for this safety risk.

Mission accomplished.
